Phil was born and raised in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, where he began studying drums privately at age ten. Shortly after, Phil was awarded a scholarship to perform in a drum ensemble at The Sherwood Conservatory of Music where he learned to play several different percussion instruments. In High School, Phil played in the Gordon Tech Jazz Band where by his Senior year was awarded the Semper Fidelis Music Excellence Award, the Louis Armstrong Music Award, and several Student of the Month awards. 

During his Junior and Senior years, he played in one of Chicago’s first live band Hip-Hop groups called The Spy. Since then he has played in several bands and projects around Chicago covering a range of styles. Phil is one of the founding members of Colonel Stem who from 1998 to 2003 released 3 albums, toured extensively, and shared the stage with bands such as Eminem, Black Eyed Peas, Suicidal Tendencies, and Chevelle.

Phil is also a Los Angeles College of Music grad where he studied with Ralph Humphrey (Frank Zappa, Natalie Cole), Mike Shapiro (Sergio Mendes, Al Jarreau), Dave Beyer (Christopher Cross, Joan Osborne), and Joe Porcaro (Stan Getz, TOTO) among others. 

Phil has over 10 years of teaching experience, was on staff at Chicago's School of Rock from 2008-2012, is a member of The Percussive Arts Society, and owns Beef Custom Drums where he builds and restores drums. Currently, Phil is working on putting together a website packed full of FREE drum lessons, tips, and drum related news stories. Phil has a wealth of knowledge in all things drums!
